Viewing angle projector screen 🖥️ 2022

If you want a large audience to enjoy your projector screen, you’ll need one with a wide viewing angle (perhaps around 160 to 180 degrees).

However, if the audience in your home theater is usually small and/or your room is deep and narrow, a narrower viewing angle is fine and usually accompanies better image quality.

What is viewing angle

Viewing angle refers to a range of angles where the image displayed on a monitor remains suitable to the user (acceptable visual performance).

Generally, all monitors will show an optimum image when you're sitting near the center.

Computer monitor viewing angle

It is recommended to place the monitor in front of you. However it is still possible to read it from an angle.

The closer this angle is to 180°, the greater the non-frontal visibility of the monitor.

Best viewing angle for computer monitor

Research shows the center of the monitor should be about 15 to 30 degrees below horizontal for optimal viewing.

Best viewing angle in cinema

New cinemas built to THX specifications have a minimum viewing angle of 36 degrees from the last row of seats. So the bigger the screen size, the farther you should be seated.

The viewing angle ‘sweet spot’ seems to be around 45-50 degrees where SMPTE, THX and 20th Century Fox recommendations converge.

What is wide viewing angle

Wide viewing angles usually means up to 89 degrees from the center, without color or contrast shifts.

The eyes of most people cover an angle between 50° and 60°.

At this angle, both eyes observe an object simultaneously.

This creates a central field of greater magnitude than is possible for each eye separately.

Projector screen

Most projectors are produced for a range from 80 to 150 inches.

The most popular screen sizes fall within 100 to 120 inches (2.5m to 3m) diagonal.

This is around 2.2m to 2.65m wide (based on a widescreen 16:9 projector).

Curiosity: Large projector screens are manufacturer in 200 inches and 300 inches (160 Degrees viewing angle).

Can a projector be placed at an angle?

A projector can be placed at an angle, but it can cause problems like glare, keystone effect, and poor image quality.

You have to adopt different other options that provide you the best image on the screen.

Chances are, it will be off-center or distorted at first.

This doesn't necessarily mean that you need to move the projector, there are ways you can bring the image into focus, either with keystone correction or lens shift.

There is no vertical or horizontal limit to how the projector can be installed.

Leave enough space around and under the projector for ventilation. Do not place it on or near any object that could block the ventilation openings.

What size projector screen do i need

There is no standard projector screen size due to the variation in applications and requirements with each projector screen.

As I said before, the most popular screen size ranges from 100 to 120 inches, that is specific for home  screens. But that depends on how much room you have.

The right side of the screen will solely depend on your needs as well as your budget.

Viewing distance

Distance between projector and screen

The specific calculation formula is as follows:

If the projector screen is 16:9, the formula is:

Projection distance = screen size X 0.87 X 0.0254 X projector’s aspect ratio.

If the projector screen is 4:3, the formula is:

Projection distance = screen size X 0.8 X 0.0254 X projector’s aspect ratio.

If the projector screen is 16:10, the formula is:

Projection distance = screen size X 0.848 X 0.0254 X projector’s aspect ratio.

Ideal distance from projector screen

The absolute “best” distance between the projector screen and room seating is hard to calculate.

Instead, a general rule is that seats should be located a distance that is no less than double the width of the projected image, and no more than five times the width of the image (the furthest seat from the screen).

Projector screen size (viewing distance)

To find your optimum distance, measure the size of your screen diagonally and divide that size by .84.

Using that calculation, a 100-inch projector screen requires an optimal viewing distance of 119 inches or 3m from the screen.

Please note this is a minimum.

Another reference:

For an HD 1080p projector, the general rule of thumb for viewing distance is 1.5 times the screen diagonal.

So if your screen diagonal is 120″ (approximately 3 meters), you should sit about 4.5 meters from the screen.

If you have a 4K Ultra HD projector, you can get closer to the screen.

How far should a projector be? Examples

I used different methodologies to give these examples:

60"

If your screen size is 60 inches, the distance should be 71.43 inches or around 1,8 m.

80"

Distance between 2.81 m e 3.06 m.

100"

Distance between 3.10 m e 3.38 m.

120"

Distance between 3.73 m and 4.07 m.

150"

Distance between 5.29 m and 5.77 m.

FAQ

What is the best vertical viewing angle...

And what about how high you put the screen? THX states in their manual for designing movie theaters, the maximum vertical angle should be 35 degrees. This means if you were looking straight ahead from your seat and looked up, you should not have to look up more than 35 degrees to see the top of your picture.

What is the recommended viewing angle for a home theater screen...

The CEDIA recommendation, which is based on SMPTE guidance, is or no viewer to have an angle of greater than 15 degrees to the top or bottom of the screen. Typically, this puts viewers eye’s at 1/3rd to 1/6th of screen height. In larger home theaters multiple rows of seats are common.

How do you find the viewing angle of a projector...

The viewing angle is the angle formed by the two ends of the projector screen and a viewer’s face. Calculate the distance that gives you a 30° angle. That distance should be your minimum distance from the screen. Diagonal length of screen (inches) ÷ 0.6 = Minimum distance (in inches).
