After a few classmates asked for my guidance on the subject, I chose to write about "How to run the pixel refresher". Stick with me…
What is pixel refresher
'Pixel Refresher' is a feature that helps to prevent temporary image retention.
On Sony TVs the feature is called 'Panel Refresh' and LG calls it 'Pixel Refresher'.
Where to find pixel refresher
OLED LG TV
You can usually run 'pixel refresher' in a ‘LG OLED TV’ in this order:
- Settings.
- Three dots.
- Picture.
- Screen Saver.
- Pixel refresher.
Please take these steps as guidelines, your TV model may have it slightly different like: ‘Setting’ → ‘Picture’ → ‘OLED Panel Setting’ → ‘Pixel Refresher’. In any case look for 'settings' in your TV.
Just note that this is the manual option for the pixel refresher.
Sony pixel refresher (Panel Refresh)
Select Display & Sound → Expert panel settings → Panel Refresh.
Select Display → Expert panel settings → Panel Refresh.
Select Picture & Display → Expert panel settings → Panel Refresh.
How to run pixel refresher on LG OLED TV
The pixel refresher may be manually or automatically activated.
2000 hours
Pixel Refresh runs automatically at every 2000 hours of content viewing.
It requires the power to be connected for about 10 minutes to complete.
4 hours
The auto feature may activate when the TV power is turned off, but only after the TV has been turned on for a accumulated total of four hours or more, which need not be consecutive. Pixel Refresher may automatically run for several minutes after the screen is turned off.
How long does pixel refresher take
LG’s automatic ‘pixel refresher' will run for a few minutes once your TV is turned off. Some claim that it may take up to 10 minutes.
In general, a manual ‘pixel refresher' takes 1 hour to complete after a 2000 hour cycle.
How often to use pixel refresher LG OLED
According to LG, ‘pixel refresher’ should be automatically activated for a few minutes whenever you watch your TV for more than four cumulative hours.
You should also run ‘pixel refresher’ when the ‘accumulated television viewing time’ reaches 2000 hours or more.
Note: The power needs to be connected.
How do i know when pixel refresher is done
In general a white line will cross your screen. When your TV is completely black, then the ‘pixel refresher’ procedure is over.
As an example, LG literally tells us that a horizontal line may appear at the top or bottom of the screen when the process is almost finished.
How to turn off pixel refresher on LG TV
First of all, you should not turn off the pixel refresher.
But nothing stops you from turning off your TV. It will not help you prevent image retention though.
LG pixel refresher message
In case the TV was turned on before pixel refresher could be completed (or it got interrupted), a message like "the TV was turned off before pixel refresher could be completed" may appear.
It is not a big deal. Again, you should do the pixel refresh when the TV asks you to do.
If LG OLED pixel refresher is not working
There may be many causes for this.
Try turning the TV off and on again (unplug it completely). Or leave it unplugged for an hour.
Try updating your TV's software.
If nothing works, you may need to replace the screen panel or buy another TV.
